Opera Parallèle and SFJAZZ will present their first collaboration in a new, fully staged production of Champion: An Opera in Jazz by Terence Blanchard, 5-time Grammy Award-winning composer and trumpeter. The libretto is by Pulitzer Prize- winning Michael Cristofer.

The Story

Champion is a true story about Emile Griffith, a world welterweight boxing champion in the 1960s, who spent decades haunted by his fatal beating of rival Benny Paret in the ring, and the public’s response to his sexuality.

Invite friends to your home to see beloved mezzo-soprano Catherine Cook in Lee Hoiby’s one-act opera Bon Appétit!, a paean to Child’s inimitable cooking style. An episode of Julia Child’s television show entirely devoted to making a classic French chocolate cake, gets an operatic treatment. Catherine will be accompanied by pianist Keisuke Nakagoshi.

2.  ROB ZABORNY OF HAYES STREET GRILL PREPARES DINNER

After the opera, Rob Zaborny, executive chef at Hayes Street Grill, will prepare dinner for you and your guests. The evening ends with champagne and of course chocolate cake.
