Since its inception, Opera Parallèle has created valuable experiences for emerging performers and administrators through its internship programs. Our artistic and administrative professionals enjoy sharing their experience and their work lives with well-chosen interns, and our organization reaps the benefit of the energy and perspective that these interns bring. Singers, instrumentalists, conductors, stage directors, production personnel, and administrators beginning their careers should consider an Opera Parallèle internship as a potentially valuable real-world experience with a vibrant, edgy company.
To Apply
Internships are available in Conducting, Stage Management and Opera Production, Stage Direction, Educational Outreach, and Arts Administration. Applicants must be enrolled with an accredited educational institution. For more information, contact Daniel Harvey, Artistic Assistant: Community Programs.
Types of Internships
Conducting
An Opera Parallèle conducting intern will gain experience working with a professional opera company under the direction of our Artistic Director. He or she will gain visibility as a young conductor by conducting our Hands-on-Opera production, and assisting our Artistic Director during staging rehearsals of our mainstage productions. The intern will also expand his or her knowledge of contemporary opera, fundraising, non-profit organizational structure, and arts administration. A successful candidate would be a collaboration-oriented, self-motivated musician with conducting experience, piano skills, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Stage Management and Opera Production
Opera Parallèle’s stage management and production intern will work under the direction of our Production Stage Manager. He or she will be an integral part of all production meetings, rehearsals, and performances. The candidate will have an opportunity to learn about developing relationships with the staff of various performance venues and with technical and artistic teams, and may have the opportunity to be part of our production team in a main or secondary production. For the right candidates, internships can also be created for emerging production professionals in such areas as set, lighting, costume, or wig/makeup design.
Stage Direction
The Stage Director internship is for an emerging director to gain experience with a contemporary opera company known for innovative staging and concept design. The intern will work with Opera Parallèle’s Creative Director as a production is conceived, designed, and brought to fruition in performance.
Educational Outreach
The internship for Educational Outreach is for a performing artist or teacher interested in learning how to cultivate and maintain a thriving educational community centered around relevant, contemporary operas. The intern will assist our Educational Programs Director with school contacts, production tasks, and curriculum development for our three-tiered outreach program. Administrative
An Administrative Intern will gain experience in all facets of arts administration for a successful, growing organization. He or she will have the opportunity to assist with marketing, donor development, audience building, ticket sales management, and a variety of administrative tasks.
