Angel Heart – a music storybook
Opera Parallèle’s own Brian Staufenbiel will direct the staging for the Cal Performances’ multimedia concert of Angel Heart in Hertz Hall on Oct. 6th at 5 p.m. The production will also be performed in New York’s Carnegie Hall. Based on the story by children’s book author, Cornelia Funke, Angel Heart tells the story of a young girl who finds peace after heartbreak with the help of a petulant guardian angel. The music, a mix of lullabies, folk songs and original music by Luna Pearl Woolf will be performed by Frederica von Stade, Lisa Delan, Daniel Taylor and Sanford Sylvan as well as Oakland’s St. Martin de Porres School Chorus with Matt Heimovitz’s all-cello ensemble, Uccello. Angel Heart will be released in September as a CD storybook and iPad App featuring the same cast with the exception of mezzo-soprano Zheng Cao who died last February. All performances will be dedicated to her memory.
